Veins larger than 3mm or deep clusters may not be suitable for laser treatment and will require the medical attention using small injections with chemical solution or foam directly in the veins called sclerotherapy.  

This is the most common treatment for improving the cosmetic appearance of the varicose veins. Also, the sclerotherapy is performed to treat the symptoms of swelling, aching, burning and heavy legs for those people with varicose veins.  

The results of the sclerotherapy are long term or permanent, depending how large and deep the varicose veins are. You may need multiple sessions for optimum results.  

Immediately after sclerotherapy, you need to use stockings for up to one week and reduce the activity, swimming pool, hot bath or sauna, for couple of days.  

The recovery time after sclerotherapy may involve bruising for 2-4 weeks.

Often, during the initial consultation, after assessment, if the varicose veins are too large, we may advise you to have the surgery, as the sclerotherapy or the laser may not be effective.
